About Hawk The Vote
Hawk the Vote is an award-winning lab at Roger Williams University. Hawk the Vote at RWU won the 2012 National Winner Mark of Excellence Award for Best Online Reporting, Small Colleges. The HawktheVote lab is part of a course in the journalism major, Digital Journalism 1 where aspiring journalists learn digital chops that are necessary post college and throughout any journalists career. Each year, the students and professor of the course put on two productions and live stream the video: a student run debate against the College Democrats and College Republicans of RWU and a live stream and full coverage of the presidential election. Students not only learn the digital aspect of journalism but also how to cover politics in the media.
Kayla Ebner is a journalist who loves photography. She was a member of Roger Williams University class of 2019. She loves digital journalism and is very passionate about telling a story through a photograph. Kayla is a well-rounded, confident writer and speaker and is always looking for a new story to write about and photograph.
Rachel Bimonte is a journalist with a strong passion for the truth. She has skills in writing, blogging and fashion reporting and enjoys exploring areas of digital journalism. Rachel likes collaborating with other people and practicing her leadership and team building skills. Rachel plans to stay in the Northeast and expand to the tristate area in order to pursue magazine writing and editing at a fashion magazine in Manhattan.
Kacie Welcome is a journalist who enjoys working with an array of technological outputs. She has an interest in the public health realm, specifically the biology aspect, and researches and writes about such topics. She also has a passion for music and the entertainment industry. Miranda Coker is a Journalism Major with a double minor in Political Science and Theater, from Los Angeles, California. Miranda is a member of the Roger Williams University Class of 2018. Miranda has written for The Hawk’s Herald and The Odyssey Online. Her dream job is to travel and become a photojournalist. She is glad she has been able to combine her loves of Journalism and Political Science while being a part of Hawk the Vote.
Lexi Shy is a Journalism major and a Visual Arts minor and with a Core Concentration in Photography in the class of 2017 at Roger Williams University. Lexi is from Suwanee, G.A.. She was a participant in Habitat For Humanity as well as The Hawks Herald as a feature writer. Her interests include documentation photography, traveling and animals. She hopes to be an professional photojournalist and work on natural disasters and on social justice documentation in third world countries.
Emily Kamens is a Journalism major with a Visual Arts Minor and Concentration in photography in the class of 2018 at Roger Williams University of Bristol, Rhode Island. Emily was born in Hartford, Conn. and raised in Terryville, Conn. She was a participant in Peer Pals and Engineers without Borders, as well as a part-time participant in the school newspaper The Hawks Herald as a photographer. Emily was not only interested in writing and photography but also shared passion for other cultures. She intended to join the Peace Corps. After college and continue her work as a photojournalist for National Geographic or another corporation that would allow her to live abroad and document the lives of those who live in poverty in third world countries.
Holly Huntoon is a junior Journalism major at Roger Williams University and an aspiring producer for the news. She has interned at NBC 10 this past summer, inspiring her to want to produce news shows. Her dream job is to be a professional country singer in Nashville, Tennessee. Johanna Walsh is a Media Communication major at Roger Williams University and aspiring PR Specialist. Her past internships have sparked her interest in social media and she hopes to get involved in fashion and entertainment.
Matthew Elias is currently a Senior Journalism Major at Roger Williams University. From Madison, Conn., he enjoys helping around the community volunteering at local papers, such as The Hawks Herald and The Madison Patch. In his free time, he enjoys wrestling, photography and traveling.
Connor’s passions include radio broadcasting, collecting vintage baseball cards, and engaging with people from all walks of life. From an early age, Connor loved to present in front of audiences, so naturally he gravitated towards radio. His love and support for the Boston Red Sox sparked his interest in baseball history, which led him to collect old baseball cards. The loving environment of his high school allowed him to develop into a unique and confident young man: perfect for the role of radio broadcaster. His passions made his experience at Roger Williams University worthwhile.
Kyle Souza is an aspiring Journalism major at the Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. Souza is Race Chaser Online’s New England motorsports insider, covering everything from the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to the NASCAR Whelen All American Series and the PASS North Super Late Models.
When not writing, Souza works at the Seekonk Speedway as the track’s Friday night public address announcer and press writer, and is also the Media Director for both the Granite State Pro Stock Series and the Tri Track Open Modified Series.
Joseph Carosi is a senior journalism major. He is a member of the Roger Williams University class of 2017. His role for election night is audio. He enjoys watching almost any sport, and is always looking for a big sports story topic to write about. In the future Joseph hopes to become a successful sports writer for a well know publication.
Lauren is a junior at Roger Williams University studying Journalism and Communications. Her expertise includes content writing, social media, blogging and marketing. She hopes to get a career as an investigative news reporter.
Dillon Stambaugh is primarily a sports journalist with interests in politics, pop culture, and poetry. He has an unapologetic affinity for words and athletics, and enjoys the marriage of both.
Jamie Costa is a Journalism and Spanish double major in the class of 2018 at Roger Williams University She was born and raised in Sandwich, Massachusetts and was a member of the Roger Williams Equestrian Team during the 2014-2015 season. She also wrote for the Roger William’s newspaper, The Hawks Herald. In the Fall of 2016 she worked with the award winning Hawk The Vote media lab. Other interests beside writing include photography, travel and reading. She hopes to one day continue these aspects into a career with National Geographic or the New York Times.
Paul, originally from Suffield, Conn. is a senior Journalism major at Roger Williams University. He also studies Political Science and Gender & Sexuality Studies. He is an avid photographer and aspiring multimedia journalist with skills in video recording and editing. Being a part of Hawk The Vote has allowed Paul to explore the political climate while cultivating his media familiarity, and he hopes to carry his ambition with him in his career after graduation in 2017.
Jonathan Perlstein is a senior at Roger Williams University, pursuing a major in journalism and a minor in visual arts. Hailing from north of Boston, is an avid creator of sorts, shooting photography and videos, producing and recording music, as well as songwriting and storytelling.
